Online shopping? You may need to pay online sales tax

online tax 320 220

The Marketplace Fairness Act, a bill that would require online retailers to collect sales tax when it comes to online shopping purchases, is making its way through the Senate. Currently, only retailers with a physical presence within the state have the right to collect sales tax. Supporters of the bill include brick-and-mortar stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy Co Inc and Sears. The bill is also supported by Amazon, the largest online retailer. Amazon initially was against the tax in 2011, but now supports it after it agreed to pay taxes in several states including California. Opponents of the bill, EBay being the largest, say the bill will excessively burden online retailers, who haven’t had to…

Japanese adult movies could thrive under TPP?

Japanese adult movies could thrive under TPP?

If Japan joins the tariff-eliminating Trans-Pacific-Partnership (TPP), some Japanese feel the country’s adult video industry could succeed in foreign markets. Weekly Japanese tabloid Shukan Asahi Geino feels that adult video productions from Japan and the U.S. will compete much like agricultural products and cars. Author Takashi Kadokura feels that Japan has an advantage over the Americans in the adult video market. Kadokura feels that under the TPP, Japan will be exporting more videos than it imports. Kadokura feels that U.S. adult videos, with their boring plot lines, will be at a disadvantage in Japan because Japanese videos focus on various story lines. U.S. videos would also have to add in mosaic to cover genitalia in…

British Columbia to import low-wage miners from China

British Columbia to import low-wage miners from China

Liberal leader Christy Clark touts coal mining as a jobs machine for British Columbia. Too bad many of those jobs will go to low-wage workers imported from China. HD Mining is backed by Chinese investment. The company plans to operate a mine near Tumbler Ridge. HD Mining claimed it couldn’t find qualified Canadians. Maybe this was because its job adverts required Mandarin skills. Meanwhile, the Chinese miners are only required to know 100 English words. And they are willing to work for peanuts compared with their Canadian counterparts. The government has already approved 201 Chinese miners to work at Tumbler Ridge on a temporary basis. But as many as 2,000 Chinese miners could be expected…

Apple annihilates Samsung in patent war

Apple won a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung last week. A San Jose jury found Samsung had violated six of Apple’s patents and awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages. The jury came up with its verdict so quickly, it left some wondering if they understood what they were doing in a case involving complex patent issues and more than a hundred pages of judge’s notes. Some jury members said they’d already made a decision at the beginning of the trail. The verdict, in favor of Apple Inc., awarded the company $1.5 billion to be paid by Samsung. Apple has also asked that eight Samsung products be taken off the US market: the Galaxy…
