Burger King horse meat contamination allegations are putting fast food lovers on edge throughout the U.K. and Ireland. Burger King has admitted that some of its burgers were indeed contaminated with horsemeat. The problems started with a Polish distributor that sent meat to Silvercrest, a food processing plant which supplied Burger King and other companies with their meat. The distributor was swapping out beef with other meats as a filler to create cheaper burgers. According to Burger KIng, their independent DNA test results came back negative for any equine DNA, but samples taken from Silvercrest did show small traces of equine DNA. Food Stamps fuel America’s appetite for junk food

A record 47 million Americans are on food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as it is formally known. This costs the US federal government $75 billion per year. Is that money being spent wisely? Research from the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University suggests not. A study from the center estimates that as much as $2.1 billion in food stamp money is being spent each year on sugary drinks. Some states have proposed efforts to limit purchases to healthy food. A British man attacked his girlfriend of five years with HP sauce because she was reading 50 Shades of Grey. He felt the novel was too pornographic. Raymond Hodgson, 31, was furious when he caught his girlfriend, Emma McCormick, reading the erotic E. L. James novel, 50 Shades of Grey. The global obesity epidemic is officially scary. A new report shows the world’s population is 17 million tons overweight, the equivalent of an extra 242 million people. America is significantly fatter than the rest of the world — the US accounts for only 5 percent of the world’s population but one third of its excess biomass — but other nations are rapidly catching up. Mickey Mantle’s restaurant closes in New York

Mickey Mantle’s, the restaurant and bar in Central Park South named after the New York Yankees great, was shut down on June 5 after not paying rent for months. The sports bar was once part-owned by the Mickey Mantle himself. Mantle died in 1995. Current owner Chris Villano blamed the closing on rising food prices, interference by the landlord and changing city regulations. Bloomberg’s soda ban: NYC takes a collective Big Gulp!

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on sugary drinks larger than 16oz as part of his ongoing effort to fight obesity in the Big Apple. Defending his proposal, Bloomberg said that obesity is a nationwide problem and New York was “doing something” about it. The ban, which could go into effect as early as March next year, has received a mixed reaction, sparking criticism from some who have labelled Bloomberg’s move more nanny state politics.
